Invoices (Bills) vs. EOBs

What is an EOB – EOB stands for Explanation of Benefits. This is a document that is sent to you to let you know a claim has been processed. The most important thing for you to remember is an EOB is not a bill. It lets you know which healthcare provider has filed a claim on your behalf, what it was for, whether it was approved, and for how much. You should always review your EOB to make sure it’s correct. Here’s a breakdown of how to read your EOB.

1. Explanation of Health Care Benefits

The top of the EOB contains information such as dates, names, a claim number, insurance plan identification, and provider information.

2. Provider Section

The grid section breaks down payment information. You’ll see how much the provider charged, followed by any adjustments made per their agreement with BCBSND, resulting in the “Allowed Amount” column.

3. Patient Non-Covered Amount

Depending on your plan, some services aren’t covered. Those charges would be indicated here.

This is a sample.
EOBs are company specific and may include varying information

4. Amounts you are responsible for

Deductible, copayment, and coinsurance are cost-sharing amounts that are your responsibility.

5. Amount You Owe

The most important part of the EOB is the amount you owe. When you get a bill from the provider, the amount charged should match this number.

6. Patient Benefit Summary

In the summary section, you’ll see additional notes about how your claim was processed and a running tally of your cost-sharing amounts for the year.

About Your Lab Bill

LabCorp Bills – LabCorp is a trusted partner of Music City PrEP Clinic and has been servicing our patients since our inception in 2018. LabCorp’s staff work side by side with our lab techs to provide our patients with caring, efficient in-clinic services leading to accurate and prompt results.

Here is an example of a Labcorp bill

– Receiving a bill from LabCorp

Since you were receiving services at Music City PrEP Clinic, you may not have expected to receive a bill from LabCorp. In some cases, you may receive a bill due to an internal error.

– Who should NOT receive a bill

If you are being seen for PrEP and insured, Affordable Care Act (ACA) plans must cover PrEP medications, appointments, and labs (testing) at no cost to you. In the event that your lab work was not covered 100%, there are programs to help with your copays and deductibles.

If you’re uninsured, Music City PrEP Clinic and LabCorp have programs that may cover the cost of your labs. Some conditions may apply.

– Who might receive a bill

If you are receiving diagnostic STI testing and you are insured, you may need to pay any deductibles, copayments, or coinsurance that your plan requires.  Make sure you read your plan carefully so that you know what your plan will (and won’t) cover. Music City PrEP Clinic’s mission-aware PrEP assistance program currently does not offer assistance for patients who are not taking PrEP for the prevention of HIV.
